In very basic terms, a GPS System is a small computer that receives signals from satellites, and uses these signals to determine its exact position at any given time. The GPS has detailed maps stored inside, and the computer software uses the maps, and its current position to perform specific tasks. The most common task is to guide the user from its present position to a specified destination. Just think of it as a maze puzzle where the maps show all of the possible paths. When you select a destination, the software in the system looks for the best route from your known position to your selected destination. It then uses that route to give you your turn by turn directions. It does this by constantly checking the current position in relation to the map route. If you do not have a selected destination it will show your postiton ion a local area map. Most GPS Systems have some additional functions as well. - Warn you when you have left the planned route and recalculate the route
- Find and use routes around detours or other problems in your route
- An internal database has searchable information on many Points of Interest near your current position including:
- Food, Hospitals, Police, Lodging, Attractions and much more.
